As a Storage Administrator with the responsibility of protecting data on the machines of my companies VIP’s, I chose IBM’s Tivoli CDP for Files. This real-time backup solution ensures data is copied as it changes, which has the secondary benefit of saving network bandwidth since traffic doesn’t need to be scheduled (& moved all at once). I also enjoy the ability to keep multiple versions and the ease of having users to do their own restores. Written by the Inventor of Tivoli CDP for Files in a forum posted on IBM website, here is a summary of some pro’s.
In short, here's how Tivoli CDP for Files wins over other software (ex. Nortel Backup, etc):
- We're about the only true-continuous solution in the market.
- We're invisible, always-running always-on software; user does not "run" us.
- Email PST message-level backup is king.
- We're the lightest foot print, smallest, and fastest (and least expensive).
- We're client-only; no server component to buy or manage.
- We scale limitless because no server component.
- We're still fully managed, centrally controlled (even w/o server).
- We have an on-machine and off-machine data pool for highest possible protection.

I also found the cost of Tivoli CDP for Files (with our ever scrutinizing budgets) was an easy sell to the Directors at my company (in fact, were saving significantly over the 3rd party service we were using before). I’ve learned thru experience however that Tivoli CDP for Files can only be limitlessly scaled, fully managed and centrally controlled if coupled with a Management tool like CDP Manager. With CDP Manager there is no better solution for mobile PCs or desktops (regardless if real-time protection is required) than Tivoli CDP for Files.
Here are some Features of CDP Manager to monitor and administer your Tivoli CDP for Files environment:
- Graphical interface is fully customizable and sort able for ultimate organization.
- Issue-identification at a glance with color-coded warnings.
- Tracks histories, records statistics and errors, and charts reported data.
- Allows setting of triggers and setting auto-notifications for autonomous monitoring.
- Monitor multiple Root destinations of different CDP environments all at once.
- User-friendly wizards for updating a published configuration, pushing new installs, and troubleshooting.
- Also includes a knowledge-base of common issues, best practice methods and other support.
CDP Manager is currently only available in a Beta Version. We are still evolving this tool and building the knowledge base. If you are responsible for planning a Real-time backup solution for more than 50 PCs, and are considering IBM Tivoli CDPforFiles, then you could qualify as a beta tester. If willing, please fill out this survey and we will contact you for a phone interview.
